Step 1 ~
Select the Eliptical Marquee Tool (figure 1: A) and draw a circle around the iris of the eye (step 1:B). It does not have to border the iris exactly. You can hold down shift while dragging to make a perfect circle with the elliptical marquee tool. Then copy the selection and paste it.
Step 2 ~ Select the dodge tool and change it's brush size to 122, brush hardness to 0%, brush Range to midtones, and brush exposure to 100%.. Then take it and go over the inside of the iris like in figure B (figure 2:A).
Step 3 ~ Select the eraser tool and change it's brush size to 48, hardness to 0%, Opacity to 100%, and Flow to 100% (figure 3:A). Next place the eraser tool above where the pupil should lay in the iris and click four times (figure 3:B). Now we can see the pupil.
Step 4 ~ On the menu go to Image > Adjustments > Variations (figure 4:A). Click on the "original" thumbnail, make sure "midtones" is selected and then click on thumbnails above each color to apply that to the image. I clicked cyan twice, then blue once, and green once. When you are done click "ok" You should now see a similar image to figure B. If you used different colors than I did then yours will probably be a different color.
Step 5 ~ Now take the eraser tool again and erase everything outside of the iris to get rid of any excess color that we do not want (figure 5:A).
Step 6 ~ Open up the "Layers" palette if it isn't already open (to open it go to the menu Window > Layers). Then you will notice a drop down menu that currently says "normal". Click on that and scroll through different layer options. Experiment! Find out which effect you like the best and keep it. I made mine 'Linear Burn' (step 6:A).
Step 7 ~ On your menu, go to Layer > Merge Down.
Repeat Step 1 & Step 5 (do not do steps 2-4)
Step 8 ~ After you repeat step 1 & step 5, on your menu go to Image > Adjustment > Levels (figure 8:A). This is where you can adjust the shadows, midtones, and highlights of each color. On the drop down menu where it says "RGB", click on that and select a color. Play around with the three arrows until you like the results then select another color on the drop down menu. When you are happy with what you have picked, click "ok".
Now you are finished!
Make sure to do more experiments on different eyes - the more practice you get the better you become! If you would like to show me your results or you have any quesfions please contact me
